Jackals Sign Scrum-Half Carlo de Nysschen
Carlo grew up in Pretoria, South Africa where he attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), a very prestigious rugby school. In 2014, he played for the Blue Bulls Rugby Academy U18s during the National Academy Tournament week in Worcester, South Africa. He helped the team to the U19 National Currie Cup Championship where they advanced to the semi-finals.
Carlo continued his education and rugby career at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The first year he played on the U19 Free State Cheetahs then was promoted to the U21 team the next two seasons.
In 2017, Carlo moved to the United States and joined the Glendale Rugby Academy playing for the Glendale Merlins D1 team. During the Fall of 2018, he played for the Glendale Raptors for the Exhibition season. His elite performance led to him being signed by the Colorado Raptors for the 2019 season. During the 2019 season, Carlo earned 11 caps, seven of which he scored two tries and kicked 5 conversions, and was named twice in the ‘MLR Team of the Week’. Carlo became an American Qualified player and resigned with the Raptors for the 2020 season.
Carlo believes the inaugural Jackals team has “an unbelievable opportunity to build something really special in a city that has a great history and love of the sport.” He is excited to work with a coach of Coach Allen’s stature and says that he could sense the start of a “family” already building within the organization.
Carlo continued, “having a community of support is really important to me and a big factor in the decision to make the move to Dallas… and the weather since I lived in Denver for three years.” Welcome to the pack Carlo!
