Recent Signee Tuidraki Named to Fijian National Team
Dallas Jackals recent addition Tuidraki Samusamuvodre was named to the Flying Fijians, the Fiji National team, to compete in the Autumn Nations Cup in Europe this November. In recent years, Tuidraki has represented Fiji on the Fijian Latui and Fijian Drua. In 2019, he joined the Fijian Warriors assisting the team to the Pacific Rugby Challenge Championship and captained the side in 2020. Tuidraki is one of 9 local players to be selected for the touring squad.
Although his selection for the National team is exciting, the passing of his grandmother earlier this week weighs heavy on Tuidraki. “I want to dedicate the selection for the squad to my family and my grandmother. Being selected to represent my country is a dream come true and I know how much it means to my family, my village, and how much it would have meant to my grandmother.”
Tuidraki continued, “It’s a hugely exciting and talented squad to be part of and I want to contribute as much as possible on the playing field. We’ll be going up against many Tier 1 Nations but this is why we play rugby. We want to test ourselves against the best in the world and hopefully cause a few upsets.”
Competition at the Autumn Nations Cup will be fierce, but Fiji Rugby’s Chief Executive John O’Connor said, “It is important that we perform at this high level to open new pathways and opportunities for the players and Fiji Rugby.” With Fiji already qualifying for the 2023 World Cup in France, this is a good opportunity to build depth for the team. The squad will begin training October 25 with the playing schedule as follows:
November 6 v Portugal (test match)
November 15 v France
November 21 v Italy
November 29 v Scotland
Allen Clarke, Jackals Director of Rugby and Head Coach said, “It’s a fantastic personal achievement for Tuidraki to be selected for the Fijian National squad. He’s a very talented young man of tremendous character with the skill-sets to succeed on the international stage. I know he’s very excited; all of us at the Dallas Jackals wish him every success in the forthcoming Autumn Nations Cup.”
