Jackals Beat Seattle Seawolves In Front Of Record Crowd
The Jackals spent most of the second half lined up across the pitch just in front of their try line as they battled to keep Seattle from scoring. A good part of that time, they were playing a man down, sometimes two, because of yellow cards. No problem.
Somehow or the other (and a lot of tackling), the Jackals managed to keep the high-scoring Seawolves at bay and came away with a 14-7 victory Sunday evening at Choctaw Stadium.
The Seawolves were pounding the out-numbered Jackals time and again. But they never could break through for a try that might have tied the match. The record crowd of Jackal fans loved the way their team was playing.
“When the energy got low, it was just heart,’’ team captain Jeronimo Gomez Vara said.
The Jackals (5-6) have brought problems on themselves in recent matches with a lack of discipline. They conceded 17 penalties in their loss to RFCLA a week ago. Prop Juan Pablo Zeiss, a key player, received a second yellow card late in that match and had to serve a one-game suspension Sunday.
Gomez Vara said that the coaching staff has emphasized cleaning that up in recent weeks. “We need to keep working on it,’’ he said.
The Jackals scored in the 5th minute on a try by Nic Benn, set up by a line-out. Daemon Torres made a one-handed grab on a breakout in the 23rd minute and raced for the other Dallas try.
Martin Elias made both conversion kicks from difficult angles to give the Jackals a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Seattle (8-3) got its only points on a try from Divan Rossouw in the 67th minute and a conversion. In a match like this one, that figures. It was one of the few times in the second half the Jackals were at full strength.
After a bye week, the Jackals will return to action on Sunday, June 2 against the defending MLR champion New England Free Jacks at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, MA. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT, and the match will be televised by The Rugby Network.
