Kotze’s Five Tries Not Enough to Secure Victory for Jackals
Despite five tries from the Jackals’ Dewald Kotze on Friday night, the Seattle Seawolves were able to rally for a 34-32 victory at Starfire Sports in Tukwila, WA.
Mack Mason, the leading points scorer in the MLR, provided the winning penalty kick in the 78th minute.
All Kotze’s tries came on mauls, with team captain Sam Golla leading the charge. Kotze had four tries heading in the game, among the top five in the league, and is now the league leader.
It was the second straight heartbreaker for the Jackals. They led Houston, the only undefeated MLR team, last week before another last-minute penalty kick beat them.
“We’re right there,” Kotze said after the game. “We just need to take that next step.”
Kotze’s last try put the Jackals ahead, 32-24 in the 57th minute. The Jackals had more tries than the Seawolves but continued to have issues in the kicking game. They had a penalty kick but missed three of their conversion kicks.
The Jackals were strong on their set pieces the entire game, as evidenced by Kotze’s try spree, and dominated possession and territory, especially in the first half.
The Jackals are back in action at home in Choctaw Stadium on Friday, April 12, when they take on the Utah Warriors. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT and the match will be televised by The Rugby Network. Get your tickets today!
