Legion Victory Secured After TMO Stops Game
Victory wasn’t in the cards for the Jackals Sunday night. But defeat was, as they lost to the San Diego Legion 30-24 at Snapdragon Stadium.
They took a 24-23 lead over the Legion in the 66th minute of the hard-fought match before fading down the stretch when they were playing a man short for the final 12 minutes after getting two yellow cards.
The Jackals had been warned about being offsides throughout the game. Early on, the referee called a triple offsides. Later, he said everyone was offsides. He finally had enough and gave a yellow card to Lucas Bur in the 68th minute.
Blind-side flanker Jeronimo Gomez Vara scored two tries for the Jackals and did most of the work on another with a 30-meter sprint that set up Tomas Malanos for the score. Vaughen Isaacs scored the other try for the Jackals in the first half.
Legendary Australian flyhalf Matt Giteau made his debut with the Legion in the 59th minute and had an immediate impact. Giteau is 41. The average age of the Jackals’ roster is 25. Giteau played in three World Cups and helped to lead the Aussies to the 2015 final in England. Sunday, he kicked a penalty goal and a conversion goal.
His conversion came after seldom-used D’Justice Sears-Duru scored the match-winning try in the 79th minute off a series of passes that challenged the thinned Jackals’ ability to keep up.
At the halfway point of the 2024 regular season, the Jackals fell to 4-5. The Legion improved to 6-3.
The Jackals return to action on Friday when they play host to RFC Los Angeles at Choctaw Stadium. They defeated RFC Los Angeles, 32-29, in their first meeting this season. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be televised by The Rugby Network.
